Chocolate has an advantage: you can melt a bar and pour it into any of your products – as long as you use an illustration, as here in a 1956 Cadbury’s advertisement, and not a photo.


The early postwar years (this is from 1950) brought additional colour to cigarette advertising, with a focus on elegant lifestyle. Abdulla was especially skilled in its use of stylish imagery.

The Bass Red Triangle was the first trade mark to be registered under the UK's Trade Marks Registration Act 1875 – but here in 1963 the company is bold enough to use a blue triangle.

The De Havilland Comet met disaster soon after its launch in 1952. Faults were corrected, but sales never fully recovered. Here in 1960, however, confidence had returned.
